The Board

Born and raised just outside town in Brookside, Nova Scotia, Andrew is a Chartered Accountant working in Public Accounting at a local major firm. While looking for board experience he came across SSNS, and having a close friend with lived experience, felt he should do something to help out. Originally joining the board as Treasurer in 2016, and after a hiatus rejoining the board in June 2019, he’s looking forward to seeing the future of the organization and the cause.

Senior operating and management executive with 32 years in leading successful growing organizations. Results oriented director adept at managed risk taking with a keen sense of bottom-line profitability. Ability to attain consensus and buy-in and generate excitement behind major programs while building credibility and enhancing customer confidence. Known for capacity to create and articulate corporate vision and then move teams to embrace it. Attract talented people and allow teams to take chances, believing that without creative risk taking there can be no true innovation.

Kathleen is a Placement Coordinator with Nova Scotia Health. After completing her BA with
Honors in psychology at York University she obtained her Social Work degree from Dalhousie
University. Her years of experience in geriatrics began in a nursing home where she was a social worker and later the Director of Social Work. After brief stints in the insurance industry and the private sector, she found her way to her current employment with Nova Scotia Health. Through her 34 year career and her family she has seen the challenges of mental health issues. She is eager to help and make a difference through membership on the Board.

A native of Sydney, NS, Bill Cusack has served in a variety of plant management, quality and food safety roles, and as a consultant to the food industry throughout Atlantic Canada. In 2017 he launched his own business specializing in the certification of food processors to international standards for quality and food safety. With close family members experiencing mental health challenges, Mr Cusack began attending the Families Matter Program in 2020 and has maintained a connection to the association ever since. Mr Cusack joined the Board of Directors of Hope for Mental Health in the Fall of 2024, and is excited by the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing excellence.

Michael Butt earned a Ph.D. in history from Memorial University in Newfoundland. A Fulbright scholar and former assistant professor at Dalhousie University, Michael teaches at the Halifax Grammar School. In 2018, Michael co-authored a digital history textbook for IB students. He has been involved in several regional conferences and organizations concerned with community issues including affordable housing and raising mental health awareness.

Fern is an in-house litigation lawyer with Aviva Insurance Company. After graduating from Dalhousie Law School in 1986, she practiced law with a private firm for 12 years. In 1999, Fern moved in-house to achieve a better balance between work and raising her 5 children. In her career and with family members, Fern has encountered the challenges of mental health issues. She is eager to make even a small difference through her membership on the Board.

Matt Bonnell was born and raised in Corner Brook, NL, before moving off the island to complete his Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of New Brunswick. After completing his degree, he moved to Halifax and began his career in Public Accounting with Grant Thornton LLP, most recently obtaining his Chartered Professional Accounting designation (CPA). Matt’s previous volunteer experience was involvement with Autism Nova Scotia and he is excited to join the board of an organization that continues to make a difference for members of the community.

University of Alberta completed Bachelor of Education with a major in curriculum development. Developed an alternative graduation program for youth at risk to enable them to complete college diplomas. Masters in Clinical Psychology with a major in Family Therapy. Private practice for 30 years and volunteer counsellor for other agencies when they didn't have the qualified staff for challenging cases. Taught psychology courses for NSCC in the Social Services Program.
